Oh, sure, but I like expanding such kinds of discussion from the particular
to the general for dialectics' sake.

Well, that is kinda much of what we are both saying,
isnt it? You were asking about Adam's individual rate,
mentioning others of different output, and I expanded
upon it, slanting it towards my take on the subject which
I wanted to offer.

There are of course many more particular
reasons, just like Joe Mad may have used more than one
gaming console intead of drawing Battle Chasers.
But normally people are thankful when I shut up and not
ask for more elaboration!

Which affects the "amount of detail,
work, and experimentation each artists injects". :)

Ha! There are some pieces I still owe from over
2 years ago. What am I doing posting? I should be
drawing!

Oh, don't worry. There is no topic I don't overintellectualize.
That is what I am here for. I could make even Socrates scream
for less reflexion. Be thankful I did not drag in Schopenhauer and
El Greco somehow into this...

That would be a great subject, yeah.

Re: [hughes-fans] Productivity?

You read way too much which wasn't there into my
question. I'm a part time artist and know everything
you were talking about. What you forgot to mention is
that each artist produces work at his or her own
individual rate. This rate is dependent on far more
factors than you listed, including the artist's mood
and interest in the project (I've never met a
commercial artist who hasn't performed some work
he/she didn't like in order to put food on the table.
If you have, you're one up on me). My own tries have,
at best, been between a page and a half a day to two
pages a day and I won't insult even the fanzines by
trying to have it published by them. Jorge, you over
intellectualized and if you think you didn't, you're
wrong. Just sit back and enjoy the correspondence.
It's good and, imho, Adam's the best artist in the
field. Now if only he'd get a juicy commission to do a
Flash Gordon miniseries (sorry, my fantasy).

[:::Komunitas Merapi:::] Padamkan Mataku ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Judul Buku : Padamkan Mataku
[Dwi Bahasa; Jerman – Indonesia]

[kagsess] Recs

Hey guys, I'm hoping you all will be able to help me. I've recently
read "The twisted humor of St. Nick" by Sidhe. I must say that I loved
it, and I was just wondering if anyone had any favorites that was like
it. It's an AU of course, but it's funny. The whole story is very
light-hearted and enjoyable. If ya'll have any recs I'd be delighted
to read them! Completed is prefered, but WIP are also great!

Thanks in advance,

Christy

Re: [hughes-fans] Productivity?

Well, butting in, if I may, I think it is kinda unfair to compare
absolute productivity as it also depends on the amount of detail,
work, and experimentation each artists injects in their work. Some
pencilers do very rough pencils, practically just layouts, and draw
over these in ink, like latter Byrne or Larsen, with a looser, more
organic but less detailed result. Some reuse stock compositions or
figures constantly. Some have very formulaic page structures they
repeat again and again. Some dispense with most background and plug
in photoshop-filtered photos, or just leave empty space for colorists
to fill.

One of the things that I love about AH-s work, besides the usual
couple of ... things... is how he is constantly trying out different
arrangements, angles, compositions, and polishing his work more and
more. Now, sometimes I feel he actually details his pages too much,
causing slow-downs of reading pace because you feel the urge to just
stare at the art for a while, but that is a hard-to-complain-about
"flaw". Even Perez was once considered a fast artist, whose output
decreased as he became more and more attentive about the quality and
detail of his artwork.

In geneal, I do think most artists could be more productive, both for
our and THEIR sake, but I recognize modern life affords a multitude of
distractions, and slaving to a drawing board is hard work indeed.
Also, artists of the past did not have multiple conventions, store
signings, etc... and no nintendo, cable, dvds... etc.

[crazed_about_inuyasha] I's anyone making his own manga?

Hi. I was just asking if there's anyone who is trying to make his own manga story. If so, I would like we to talk about our series, just for curiosity. As I I'm drawing my own manga, I would like to know if in this group there are other people who is drawing his/her manga. I think its a very interesting think to talk about!

Looks like someone took a convention jam piece (with multiple artists
drawing on the same board) and hacked it up to sell the more desirable artists.

Re: [hughes-fans] Negative Space (was Mod Comment was Re: AH! in New Avengers #39?)

Naw, Jeff, I'm referring to a full, blank page with a mere four panels running diagonally down the lower half, diminishing in size even. Don't get me wrong, despite the debate about swiping/tracing/spitting in the face of the peanut gallery, I actually quite liked the issue. It was a short story about a very limited number of characters, and the point was that the central hero was nearly alone for much of it, a point accented by sparse visuals. I just don't feel like I got $2.99 worth of visual quantity.

Having looked through the comic again, there are indeed 23 pages of art, and while I enjoyed the visual storytelling, it is practically a 'nuff said issue. There are like 10 pages with fewer than 4 bits of speech, 6 of them having 1 or less. That wouldn't be a problem except that so much space outside the panels is left blank. Perhaps "negative space" was an incorrect term to assign to that. The page I referred to specifically at the top of this post is half of a splash where there are only 2 punches figuratively thrown. Not much action, only minimal tension buildup. With the exception of a little bit of shadowed building in the very bottom corner of the first half, there is no background whatsoever. Just blank sky. It doesn't give a sensation of height. It doesn't contain text. It doesn't serve any purpose but to give the colorist room for a gradient color fill which is mostly contained in the first half. Just dark blue sky with no point. Wasted, I say. The
space would have been better used for the surprise relegated to a smaller panel on the following page.

I guess my question could have been better phrased. In an age of nontraditional panel arrangement, why would one use so much negative space behind those panels? Nice foreshortening in the one panel, sure, but the blankness draws all your attention to that one point, and it isn't enough visually or thematically to justify it.

trev

btw, has "Letterer" become a job occupation of the past? I only just realized that fonts have taken over. I wonder if Adam is using his lettering skills on ASWW. I hope so, what with his nice penmanship and complete control over the content, but I'd understand if not considering the sheer volume of work in front of him. Just a thought.

artboymoy <LegionMoy@aol.com> wrote: By negative space do you mean the way that the characters are shoved
off to one side of the panel and or just have a lot of empty space
around them?

The explaination is easy. It's for word balloons. I generally used
to leave a third to one half of the panel empty or with background if
I thought there was going to be talking. Some writers don't write a
full script and will write the dialog after they see the pages, so
the penciler has to be sure to leave enough room in to accomdate for
this. That's the sad thing I think about today's art begin done.
Computer lettering has taken over and so you're left with pages of
art that do have these open negative spaces. I love looking at some
of my collection where the lettering was done on the board or pasted
on. This way you could view the orginal comic art as it was meant to
be. A collboration between writer, penciler, and inker. Yes, yes,
color is very important as well, please don't get me wrong,
especially nowadays when you can create real moods with lighting and
shadow.

My 2 cents.

Jeff

RE: [hughes-fans] Kill-Re: AH! in New Avengers #39 thread?

No "kill" required, as you mentioned Allison, the few posts to date (here)
discussing this topic have been polite without the level of accusation and
insult which have occurred elsewhere. I was more concerned that things
might become heated in Adam's defence when you and Adam have handled matters
with calm and aplomb :-) Warm regards,

Royd

[kagsess] New Chapter Upload

Hey guys,

It's me, Lola1618ut, and I just wanted to let you know that I've
uploaded the most recent chapter to my fanfic: Light of the Moon.

Author: Lola1618ut

Genre: Romance/Fantasy/Action-Adventure/and a lil' Comedy

Summary: Kagome's destiny lies within the lives of the sons of the Inu
no Taishou and was predicted long before she was born. See how she
delves deeper into the knowledge that she didn't just "accidentally"
fall into the well; as her present and their past collide to reveal the
true power of Kagome and her connection to the Son of the Moon.

[hughes-fans] Productivity?

Adam has said that he is slow when illustrating a comic book. Out of
pure curiosity, I'm wondering what's Adam's speed? For anyone who is
interested, Stan Lee once said that Joe Maneely was the fastest artist
he ever worked with. I've read that Maneely could produce three pages
per day of penciled, inked, and lettered artwork. Jack Kirby penciled
(and often co-wrote) a full 20-22 page comic a week, but he normally
put in a twelve or more hour day. I have absolutely no expectation of
Adam getting even close to these two, but I'm sill curious about his
rate. Thanks.

Oldwilly

Re: [hughes-fans] Re: AH! in New Avengers #39?

Well fellas...let me apologize if I came across sounding a little too aggressive..I'm basically saying the same thing you guys are =D

Seems like this is a kinda a new topic than the title... but a comment "on topic" so to speak. after looking at Avenger 39 its kinda clear? that both rainmaker and Fairchild? where "heavily referenced [swiped traced ..whatever]on more than half a dozen instances.

There are allot of people making there way around "however they can" in the biz, but I gottah say I don't see Mack as one of them. Id have to say I've always considered him a talented one and would go so far as to give him the benefit of the doubt of having an assistant that took liberties (:-/...maybe????

Oh god, I know, I wasn't saying he traced, copied or whatever. I was just
merely posting it. Hughes is up there with the top illustrators of this
generation (at least for me). I thought it was funny that people called
this swiping, when his sketch looked completely different, other than the
hands, and they were referenced not traced.
Being an artist, I have used reference and continue to use it. It's an
important tool, but Mack copied photographs, and traced other peoples work.
My intentions weren't to start a heated debate or anything like that, it
just struck me odd. That's all.

Dude, reference and rip are two different things, and the Internet is
brutal. If you? noticed Adams sketch is more appealing to the eye due to the
fact it has more exaggerated curves with the?right hand?only? part of the
drawing that syncs up with the picture. Shadows ,for the most ,part are
different,? face [dare I say] more appealing. So it is very possible that
the maxim photo may not be the reference, or a very good example on how to
reference something properly and make it something more and different.

?Once again , Referencing?in art?is almost an institution? as a tool for an
artist ?to check his drawings accuracy and to inspire.?Also to draw from
life. The pose isn't exactly? uncommon so id say it could go either way.

The net?great tool and an easy way to deliver information[I'm sure if they
look hard enough they can find a photo Davinci used? for the Mona Lisa =P]

[hughes-fans] Re: AH! in New Avengers #39?

One poster matched up the two pieces to show Adam didn't trace it

http://forum.newsarama.com/showpost.php?p=5351116&postcount=678

And he again outlined the pieces to shut one of the trolls up..It
didn't work though..'cause trolls never shut up lol.
http://forum.newsarama.com/showpost.php?p=5351688&postcount=686

I also noticed he's using Allison's quote as his Sig:)..is he anyone
from here?

[hughes-fans] Negative Space (was Mod Comment was Re: AH! in New Avengers #39?)

By negative space do you mean the way that the characters are shoved
off to one side of the panel and or just have a lot of empty space
around them?

Yes, yes,
color is very important as well, please don't get me wrong,
especially nowadays when you can create real moods with lighting and
shadow.

My 2 cents.
